T. Boone Pickens becomes vocal about alternative energy

July 12th, 2008 · 1 Comment

So a little while back I created a post inspired by Fast Company’s article titled Big Oil Man goes to Big Wind. Turns out, T Boone Pickens has some pretty lofty goals for promoting his new “energy policy”, and is even taking out commercials on CNN and other prime-time TV spots to make sure you know about it.

The website, titled PickensPlan.com features a pretty straightforward explanation of his agenda - let’s all go to wind power. And frankly, he makes a damned good argument that the American Mid West is perhaps the ideal place on the planet to fulfill a great deal of our energy needs just on wind alone. Pickens makes an interesting argument though - we need to drop about a trillion dollars on wind - starting tomorrow.

The trade off is pretty straightforward. Presently, we’re exporting billions of dollars annually to continue our addiction to foreign oil. The argument from Pickens’ camp goes one step further by reminding us that, by and large, oil-exporting nations aren’t run by the best people (nor our friendliest allies) on the planet. To compensate for a reduction in foreign oil, the idea is that we switch our peak energy production to wind, and then use our natural gas reserves to power cars on natural gas.

T Boone Pickens wants America to go to windOverall, it’s an ambitious, if not eccentric prospect of the future. However, there’s a lot of sense going on in what Pickens is proposing, and hopefully his media push will encourage our presidential hopefuls to take a listen to what he has to say.

Also worth checking out: The Pickens Plan Media library, including videos of Pickens discussing his agenda.

Hello. My name is Edgar and I’m an editor at OpposingViews.com, the debate website. Since we both cover energy and environmental issues, I thought I’d drop you a note. I would’ve e-mailed you but I couldn’t find an address.
See, we’re currently having a discussion about whether or not the U.S. should allow offshore oil drilling. You can see it here:

Although vetted experts are the ones doing the debating, anyone can contribute by choosing a side and posting comments about the experts’ arguments.
Check it out and, if you have the time, let me know what you think at eacosta@opposingviews.com
